Building A Isometric Pixel Art Diagramming Tool

Diagrams like Swimlane Flowcharts, Network Diagrams, and Entity Relationship diagrams are very powerful tools for communicating technical concepts with teams of people. You can tell I am pretty into it just by looking at the whiteboards scribbled with Network Diagrams in the background of my Youtube videos. I don’t just use them in my videos but also quite commonly with my consulting clients.

In my most recent YouTube video on Event Driven Architecture With AWS Glue For Big Data Queries I did a living network diagram using a tool called Aseprite but Aesprite is a pixel art / animation tool not a diagramming tool so it took quite some time to get all the frames lined up and the diagram looking decent.

For a while now I have had an idea in the back of my head for a diagramming tool that would allow me to create isometric pixel art animations of the cloud infrastructure I design. It would speed up time for me to produce content significantly. Additionally I could use it with the designs I give my clients and it would add a level of professional(ish) branding to my work.

The big problem is the classic “If you are a hammer every problem looks like a nail”. I am a software architect so the problem is “How do you make high quality video content faster?” and my solution is to code something.... I am not sure it is the right path but I am having fun with it so far and it’s made for a few funny little youtube shorts along the way.

I am trying not to let the scope balloon out of control. Hopefully I can grind this weekend and have something ready for a video by Monday. Let me know if you want access to play around with it sometime. ~Cheers
