Focusing on your niche or laziness?

Recently I was chatting with a colleague that does something similar to what I do. Both of us were baffled by the seemingly large divide between the programmers and the ones that do network or cloud infrastructure. Perhaps that made sense before the rise of cloud computing but being as we live in the age of “Infrastructure as Code”, where you literally are programming your infrastructure, we were scratching our heads as to why anyone would limit themselves to one side or the other.

Wouldn’t you want to know a little bit about what the code you had written was being run on? If you were on the network side wouldn’t you want to know a bit about the code that was running slow on the infrastructure you booted up?

I totally understand sticking within your niche as far as a marketing strategy goes, but these people are already hired and on the team. I suppose if everyone was so eager and willing to bridge the gap my colleague and I wouldn’t be in such high demand.

~Cheers
