Why I Made An Org Chart For My One Man Consulting Business

Why I Made An Org Chart For My One Man Consulting Business

Are you running a solo consulting business? You may want to make an org chart. Before you go locking me up in the crazy house let me explain.

As a solo entrepreneur, you wear a lot of hats. Do you actually even know how many roles/duties you are fulfilling? I didn’t until I broke down my business with an org chart.

This helped me visualize all the aspects of my business and more importantly, the aspects of my business that were being neglected. This also helped me identify all the areas I COULD hire for if I wanted to.

In reality, you might find something that is taking up your time that you can automate instead. I have done a ton of automation before even considering hiring. My whole video editing and distribution process is documented and automated so I can pump out content at this breakneck speed(Breakneck for me at least).

Am I hiring? Well yes, kind of. I am looking to bring on a Virtual Executive Assistant. If they do well and things work out then they might become my “Chef Of Staff” or COO. This last year I have made so much progress that I am starting to struggle to keep things together.

The delivery of services is still going smoothly but my concern is that the duties of marketing and sales are going to be neglected as I continue to fill my client roster. I do not want that to happen so I have started to interview for someone who can keep their attention on that part of the business along with some light admin work.

Does that mean I will not be doing my own content anymore? Not at all. I 100% will be the guy in front of the camera but I may not be the guy editing my own videos(For the best, trust me). It is the little tedious things like scheduling posts, coming up with thumbnails, doing research on things NOT related to my expertise that really suck the energy out of me.

Additionally, I am hoping this EA will act as an accountability partner keeping me on task.

So what is with the double org chart(If you are looking at my picture)? I designed my org chart as my business operates today. I do 90% of the work but have good legal and financial service providers.

The second org chart is where I want to get to in the next 60 days or so slowly passing my EA more responsibilities and probably picking up a few niche VAs as I go. For example a video editor and someone to do lead gen for me.

After that, who knows? I do NOT have aspirations of running a 100-person company. I would rather keep it small and agile. But I am reaching the limits of what I can do alone so I have to step out of my comfort zone and try something new.

Well, newish… I tried this before a few times but this time I have a lot more experience, and a better support group to guide me between my various mastermind groups and my business coach.

So wish me luck! And if you know any good Executive Assistants send them my way.

Question for you:

What roles and responsibilities suck the most energy from you? What is holding you back from delegating them?

PS: Sorry for those of you who wanted tech stuff today. I got drawn into a really cool client project that sidelined me and I already made the org chart so this post was ready to go.
