Fail Forward Faster - 12 Startups In 12 Months

This last year has been great for my consulting business. I changed my model and how I price and both my clients and I are happier than ever with the arrangement. Now that I have my systems in place

I have dedicated time put aside to actually work on marketing now. It’s amazing but how do I go about marketing? Creating YouTube content seems to be working so far, so let’s double down on that. I build amazing stuff that scales cost effectively for my clients so why not do that and put it on YouTube?

That is what I am going to do: I am going to build a handful of SaaS products. Since I am building them I might as well see if people want to pay for them so for each product I will be launching them complete with sales pages and all. Marketing has always been my achilles heel so why not try to hone that skill by marketing a variety of products.

Everyone Wins:

Schematical is about helping people build tech that scales and still is. Currently I plan on open sourcing all of the Terraform code that goes into hosting these projects. For example the Terraform code for DrawnBy.ai, The Diagram Tool and even The Mailing List To Podcast are already open sourced on my github so you can follow along as I pump out infrastructure.

Note: The infrastructure as code will be open sourced; possibly not all of the source code for the application layer. We will have to see how it goes.

Rules:

Sometimes adding some creative constraints can really help you to shake things up mentally. Here are the rules:

Rule 1: Sale Page First

Too often I fall back to things that are easier for me like building and inventing stuff. I plan to force myself to work on improving my weaknesses like marketing by launching the sales page with the alpha.

Rule 2: SaaS only

Though I would love to own a chain of self storage businesses some day today is not the day. I need to stay focused on SaaS and tech that relates to my consulting business. Additionally I know I can launch SaaS products fast enough to meet my aggressive timeline.

Timeline:

I am also taking a lesson from Peter Level’s 12 Startups in 12 Months though I doubt I will go that extreme with it. Though the idea of doing a 1 month cycle where I spend the first few days ideating and researching then 2-3 weeks to build it and then 1 week to launch and promote the project does seem appealing.

Transparency:

Another thing Peter Levels does amazingly is to publish his numbers and I think sharing my numbers publicly could be a huge value to those that consume my content so I will add that as soon as I can. Ideally before starting the 2nd project of my journey.

Partner:

Though I am working on sharpening my marketing skills I am NOT above partnering with the right people.

If you are a marketer or have a platform and want to partner up to see what we can do together I am actively looking to do that so please reach out.

If you have an idea you want to see built, hit me up.

Project Ideas:

The first project is my Diagramming software. They say “Eat your own dog food” so I built a Diagramming tool that solved my problem of trying to communicate complex abstract cloud architecture ideas in a simple, visually appealing way.

The second tool will most likely be a tool that will use ChatGPT to help people in similar situations split test their landing pages.

The mailing list to podcast is a contender as well.

~Cheers
